A client of Malaysia's largest bank recently encountered a surprising twist in her financial status when she discovered that her bank balance had inexplicably surged to over US$86 million. Hafidzah Abdullah, the director and co-founder of a human resources firm, checked her account late last month and found herself credited with over 404 million ringgit (US$86.3 million). While this windfall would have been a significant financial boon, there was a significant catch â she couldn't access the funds.
Expressing a mix of amusement and frustration, Hafidzah turned to LinkedIn on November 29 to share her experience. She humorously acknowledged Maybank for making her banking journey unforgettable, highlighting that account glitches had become a recurring issue for her. These incidents, she noted, turned into a "comedy of errors" that required visits to a Malayan Banking branch or lengthy phone waits for customer service.
In response, others joined the conversation, sharing similar experiences and concerns about banking services in Malaysia. Amid the flood of complaints and well-wishes, Shaikh Munir Ahmad, the bank's head of group customer experience management, stepped in to offer assistance. He commented on the platform, stating that he had spoken with Hafidzah, and she should now be able to access her account.
Maybank, addressing the matter reported by the New Straits Times, stated on Friday that the issue had been resolved. According to a spokesperson from the lender, it was not a system-wide problem, and the customer's account had not been compromised. Maybank, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, holds the position of Southeast Asia's fourth-largest bank by assets.
